Family Bible

The family Bible of Asa Evans of Columbia Co., NY was offered for sale on Ebay and was acquired by the submitter. The Bible is in fair condition; the front cover and the first few pages are separated, and part of the Book of Genesis is missing, but the family information is intact and quite readable. The Asa Evans family Bible information was submitted to the Rensselaer Co., NY GenWeb site by Dennis F. Marr.

It is not clear whether the third entry is a correction of the first one or a separate individual who happened to be born on the same month and day five years later.

IDENTIFICATION OF NAMED INDIVIDUALS

ASA EVANS: Revolutionary War soldier born in Upton, Worcestor Co., MA. After the war he lived in Tyringham, MA and Brattleboro, VT. Applied for pension 29 Aug 1852, residing in New Lebanon, Columbia Co., NY. Served part of his time as a substitute for his father Jonathan Evans. Moved to New Lebanon about 1792. Received pension and Bounty Land (BLW #14756-160-55). Buried in Brainard Cemetery, Rensselaer Co., NY. Had children James, Eliza and Electa and a brother William.

ELIZABETH GALE: Born MA per 1850 census (NY, Columbia Co., Town of New Lebanon, p. 8, residing with son James). Buried in Brainard Cemetery, Rensselaer Co., NY.

COMFORT BAILEY: Possibly a son of David Bailey and 2nd wife Amey ---?---. Had children Maria Antonette/Marie Antoinette, Emma Eliza, William E., George W. and Charles H. Born NY per 1850 census (NY, Columbia Co., Town of New Lebanon, pp. 7-8) when he was residing with wife Eliza, daughter Eliza, sons William and George and father-in-law Asa Evans, age 90.

WILLIAM HENRY BAILEY: Born Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co., son of Warren Bailey and Jane Bugbee (Warren descended from Joseph & Jemima Bailey of Haddam, CT through their son David, born Tyringham, MA 1761, Rev. War soldier; Jane was a daughter of Josiah Bugbee of Dutchess Co., NY and Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co., Rev. War soldier, son of Israel and Bethsheba Buckbee). Had son Warren C. and daughter Harriet A. Enlisted in Civil War at age 50, lying about age; received a pension. Two weeks after wife Electa died, married Mary ---?--- Reynolds, widow of Isaac Reynolds of Chatham, Columbia Co. Buried Brainard Cemetery, Rensselaer Co., NY.

JOHN G. BREWER: Born MA according to 1880 census (NY, Albany Co., Village of West Troy, p. 214A), occupation tinsmith. Had one known child, Sara Eliza, who married Charles H. Bailey, son of Comfort Bailey and Eliza Evans.

CHARLES H. BAILEY: Son of Comfort Bailey and Eliza Evans. Married Sarah Eliza Brewer, daughter of John G. Brewer and Emma Eliza Bailey. No further information available at this time.

ELIZA EVANS: Married Comfort Bailey (see above). Died 17 Jul 1868 at Sand Lake. Buried Sand Lake Union Cemetery, Sec. 2R, Bailey Lot.

ELECTA EVANS: Married William H. Bailey (see above). Died at the home of her daughter Harriet Gray, Ballstown Springs, Saratoga Co., NY on 4 Oct 1875. Buried in West Milton Cemetery, Saratoga Co., NY. Will probated Saratoga Co. Surrogate's Court (46-24, p. 307 et. seq.). Appears on numerous land transactions in Rensselaer Co. deeds.

MARIA ANTONETTE BAILEY a/k/a MARIE ANTOINETTE: Died at age 7 in Sand Lake and buried in Sand Lake Union Cemetery, Sec. 2R, Bailey Lot.

EMMA ELIZA BAILEY: Married John G. Brewer (see above). No other information available at this time.

WILLIAM E. BAILEY: Died at age 24 on 10 Sep 1856 in Sand Lake and buried in Sand Lake Union Cemetery, Sec. 2R, Bailey Lot.

GEORGE W. BAILEY: Son of Comfort Bailey & Eliza Evans. George enlisted for the Civil War at Nassau, Rensselaer Co., NY, Co. A, 169th Regiment. Died of wounds 11 May 1864, but location not stated in this source (American Civil War Soldiers, Ancestry.com).

SARAH EDNA BAILEY: Daughter of Charles H. Bailey and Sarah Eliza Brewer. No further information available at this time.
