This testator wrote his will in Greenbush, Rensselaer County, NY in 1795 but was a resident of Troy, Rensselaer County, NY by the time he died less than a year later. The submitter notes, "The right edge of the page is torn a bit."

Will of Jan VAN BUREN, Greenbush

In the Name of god Amen I JAN VAN BUREN of Greenbu_?_ in the County of Rensselaer Farmer being of sound disposing Mind and Memory and Understanding Thanks be to God for the same and [call?]ing to Mind the certainity [sic] of death and the uncertainity of life, do make ordain publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following.

Imprimis I do will order and direct that I be buried in a decent Manner and that all my just debts and funeral Charges be paid by my Executors.

Item. All my Estate both real and personal of whatsoever kind the same may be and wheresoever I give devise and bequeath to my beloved wife SARAH for and during her natural life.

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my said Wife Sarah the original half part or Moiety of the Farm whereon I now live with the Hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining To have and to hold to her and her Heirs and Assigns forever. But in case my wife Sarah should happen to die before me I give devise and bequeath the said half part or Moiety of the said Farm to my Grand Children, who are Children of my Daughter ANGANITY, deceased, to wit CATHARINE SARAH and HANNAH with the Hereditaments and appurtenances To have and to hold to them forever as Tenants in Common in Greenbush.

Item. After my said Wife Sarah's death I give devise and bequeath the remaining half part or Moiety of my said Farm whereon I now live to my said Grand Children to wit Catharine Sarah and Hannah and the Hereditaments & appurtenances To have and to hold to them forever as Tenants in Common in Fee Simple.

Item. All the rest residue and Remainder of my Real Estate after the death of my said Wife Sarah I give devise and bequeath to my Grand Children aforesaid to have and to hold to them forever as Tenants in Common in fee Simple.

Item. I give and bequeath to my said Wife Sarah all my household Furniture and Beds Beding [sic] and Linnen [sic] intended.

Item. All the Rest Residue and Remainder of my personal Estate I give and bequeath to my said Wife Sarah forever and after her death I give and bequeath the same to my Grand Children aforesaid to wit Catharine Sarah and Hannah forever in case said Wife Sarah should die before me.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter HENDRICKIE Widow of JOHN H BEEKMAN deceased the sum of Three hundred pounds Current money of the State of New York to be paid by my Executors in three years after my Wifes death, and that amount I intend out of my Estate.

Item. In case my loving Wife Sarah should think proper to sell and dispose of my Real Estate I do hereby empower and authorize her to sell and dispose of the same, she paying the legacy of three hundred pounds & satisfying my Grand Children aforesaid.

Lastly I do nominate constitute and appoint My Loving Wife Sarah and my grandson JOHN BEEKMAN and my friend JEREMIAH LANSING, Executrix and Executors of my Last Will and Testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this fifth day of March 1795.

Letters of Administration were granted to Sarah Van Buren and Jeremiah Lansing, since John Beekman renounced as executor of the estate of Jan Van Buren of Troy, NY.
