Last Will & Testament of Philip Slead, Hoosick, New York [born April 19, 1732; died July 30, 1803]
In the name of God Amen. I, PHILIP SLEAD of the patent of Pittstown & in the district of Hoosick, the county of Rensselaer in the state of New York, yeoman, being weak in body but of a sound disposing mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, & calling to mind the mortality of Body ~ Knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, I do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, that is to say, principally first of all I recommend my soul unto the hand of Almighty God that gave it & my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in my burying place that I shall hereafter name in a descent Christian Burial at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named, not at all doubting that at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God & as to such worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner & form >>>>>>>
Imprimis, my will is that all my just debts & funeral charges be paid & discharged by my Executors hereafter named; first of all I give and reserve in my orchard for all my family, three rods square for a burial place where my grandchildren now are buried.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife MARY at her disposal the one half part of all my endowed movables & household furniture except my desk and also the one half part of all my wool flax cloth and yarn and also the one half part of my ???? ???? & the tools & implements for making & manufacturing of cloth which I shall have by me at my decease & also I give her my great Bible & one riding beast the taking of her chose [choice] together with my ???? saddle & bridal & also one cow she taken her chose & to be kept winter & summer on my home farm & also one half part of my orchard to the northward of my crib as it is now fenced for her use & to improve upon and my two daughters namely DEBORAH and WAITY to have the use and improvement of the other half of the above said orchard, of one half part of my house and also one part of my cellar as long as they remain single. Further my will is that my wife Mary & daughter Deborah & daughter Waity shall have the use and improvement of one half part of my house & also one part of my cellar as long as they remain single and my Executors shall find them good firewood cut & drawn to there done. And also my Executors shall keep the aforesaid orchard well fenced. Furthermore my will is that all the possessions that I shall have by me at my decease shall be for the use and support of my wife & home family at my wife's discretion. Furthermore, I give unto my wife Mary fifty dollars to be paid at my decease & twenty five dollars yearly & sixty pounds of pork & sixty pounds of beef & six bushels of wheat & ten bushels of corn & four bushels of rye to be paid to her by my Executors hereafter named yearly & every year as long as she remain my widow. All which gifts & bequeath-ments herein given to my wife Mary is in lieu of her third & dowry. Furthermore, my will & pleasure is that the possessions in my house & cellar & orchard that I have given to my wife Mary & daughter Deborah & daughter Waity, if either of them should marry or decease the other shall have the whole improvement as long as either of them remain single. >>>>>
Item - I give and bequeath unto my son EDWARD SLEAD in addition to what I have already given him the sum of three hundred and seventy dollars & also a note of hand for thirty dollars that I have against him, three hundred dollars to be paid him by my son Oliver Slead one hundred to be paid in one year after my decease and one hundred to be paid within two years after my decease and one hundred within three years after my decease & seventy to be paid by my Executors within one year after my decease. Furthermore I give my son Edward Slead my cows that my father gave me. >>>>>
Item - I give & bequeath unto my son OLIVER SLEAD in addition to what I have already given him all that farm that I bought of Libbius Lanson to him & his heirs & assigns forever he paying three hundred dollars to his brother Edward Slead one hundred dollars within one year after my decease & one hundred within two years & one hundred within three years after my decease as assigned legacy.
Item - I give & bequeath unto my daughter MARTHA CHASE her heirs in addition to what I have already given her six common table silver spoons to be paid by my Executors in one year after my decease.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my daughter SIBEL GIBBS & her heirs in addition to what I have already given her the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid by my Executors within one year after my decease.
Item - I give & bequeath unto my daughter MARY EDDY in addition to what I have already given her the securities that I hold against her husband namely JOHN EDDY.
Item - I give & bequeath unto my daughter PHEBE SLOCUM her heirs in addition to what I have already given her the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid by my Executors within one year after my decease.
Item - I give & bequeath unto my daughter DEBORAH SLEAD her heirs the sum of three hundred dollars to be paid by my Executors within one year after my decease.
Item - I give & bequeath unto my daughter WAITY SLEAD her heirs the sum of three hundred dollars to be paid by my Executors within one year after my decease.
Furthermore, I give & bequeath unto my two daughters namely DEBORAH and WAITY and their heirs the one half part of my indoor movables & household furniture except my desk and what I have otherwise given away I this my last will. Also the one half part of my wool & flax cloth and yarn together with one half part of all my tools and implements for making & manufacturing of cloth to be equally divided between them each part and part alike. Furthermore, I give each of them one cow a piece & to be kept winter & summer on my home farm as long as they remain single & no longer, and I also give to each of them one common Bible.
Item - I give & bequeath unto my son GIDEON SLADE all my farming tools & tackle & implements that is for farming & also all my living stock that is not given away in this my last will together with all the hay that I should have by me at my decease he keeping the stock out that was given to his mother & sisters & also I give him my desk.
Item - I give & bequeath unto my three sons namely PHILIP & JOSEPH & GIDEON SLEAD all the rest of my estate both real & personal not before given away in this my last will where so ever it may be found together with all my securities & cash that I should have by me at my decease. I give & devise unto my three sons Philip, Joseph & Gideon Slead to them their heirs & assigns forever each one part and part alike the better to enable them to pay my just debts & funeral charges & legacies.
Finally and lastly I do make, ordain, constitute and appoint my three sons namely PHILIP, JOSEPH & GIDEON SLEAD, whole just Executors to this my last will & testament & no other. In testimony whereof I the said Philip Slead have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this twenty ninth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & three.
