Florence Reynolds Wylie
of Petersburgh

The photocopies of these photographs were kindly contributed by Katherine J. Wilkinson.

Florence REYNOLDS was born in November 1880, probably in Petersburgh, Rensselaer County, NY. She was brought up, along with her younger brother Noel A. REYNOLDS, by her widowed mother, Emma J. REYNOLDS (1849-1930), in Petersburgh. Florence was a schoolteacher. In about 1917, she married James W. WYLIE, a toolmaker from Massachusetts. They lived in Albany, Albany County, NY in 1920 and resided in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, MA in 1930. Kathy has found an undated obituary from an unidentified newspaper for Florence, which is transcribed below.

Of the first photograph, Kathy asks, "Does anyone know anything about any of these women or what brought them together for this picture?" She adds, "I did not deface this lovely photo with the numbers; they were there already."

The second photograph is of a cutting from the 3 July 1901 edition of The Democrat newspaper of Hoosick Falls, Rensselaer County, NY. You can read the caption in the image itself, but Kathy also kindly transcribed it, below, so that search engines can find the names in it.

The last photo is Florence REYNOLDS's graduation portrait.

Graduating Exercises of the Hoosick Falls High School

The annual commencement exercises of the High School, held at the
school hall Wednesday evening, were an auspicious event, both for the
large class and for the excellent record made by every student. Every
seat in the auditorium was taken, and standing room was considered a
luxury. The program rendered was as follows:
Overture—Concert Somner Reynolds's Orchestra
Oration---"The Progress of the Fine Arts" Arthur Gibbs Burton
Essay—"Evangeline" Florence Reynolds
Essay—"The American Girl of Today" M. Josephine Portman
Selection—"Garret O'Magh" Orchestra
Essay—"Hoosick" Phoebe Mattison Shaw
Essay—"Fads" Alice Loretto Murphy
Selection Orchestra
Oration—"The Cuban Question" Walter Ernest Nutt
Essay—"The Beginning of a New Life" Marcia Blanche Eldred
Selection Orchestra
Address—Andrew V. V. Raymond, L.L.D. .
Waltzes—"Wilhelmina" J. T. Hall Orchestra
Presentation of Diplomas .
Chorus—"High School Medley" Pupils of the High School
Selection—"The Invincible Eagle" Sousa Orchestra

The address to the graduates by Andrew V. V. Raymond, president of
Union University, was a masterly effort conducive of good to both class
and audience. Every participant in the program presented well written and
well declaimed efforts, creditable to themselves and to their Alma Mater.
Samuel W. Gage of Eagle Bridge also graduated. A pleasant feature was the
presentation of a 96-count classical diploma to Victor Caryl Myers of Buskirks,
an honor not too often won. Mr. Myers graduated last year. This is the first
diploma gained by a Hoosick Falls scholar.

The Misses Reynolds and Simpson intend to teach school next year.

Members of the High School and the class, to the number of 28, spent Friday at
Hedge's Lake. The chaperone was Miss Grace E. Beals. A very enjoyable time was
experienced. The Democrat is fortunate in being able to present today a group
photograph of the class. After the exercises a reception was held. Refreshments
were served, and dancing was enjoyed.
