US Civil War veterans
from Berlin, NY

Photocopies of these wonderful photographs were kindly contributed by Carrie Rutherford of Madrid, Saint Lawrence County, NY. The first photo was taken on 30 May 1907 in Berlin, NY.

The following information was written on the back of the photograph: "The Old Soldiers of Berlin NY 5/30/1907
  • Front Row: Len Lewis, William Hull, Edward Winn, George Grant, Mr. Busher, Herbert Lott.
  • Back Row: Jetson Stillman, Sylvester Cowdrey, Eleazer Reynolds, Alfred Tracey, William Lewis, Edward Boessey, A. H. Hill, not known (but think Lackey), Edward Rhodes.
  • Flag Bearer: M. Broderick."

NOTE from the contributor: "My great-grandfather is the big guy in the back row to the left. His name is Eleazer REYNOLDS. Eleazer Reynolds was born on 19 August 1843 in Berlin to Amos REYNOLDS and Penelope SMITH. According to census records, Amos was a butcher in Berlin. Eleazer lived his whole life in Berlin, until his death on 12 March 1911. He married Mary Jane WILLIAMS on 18 November 1871 and had 12 children, eight of whom survived infancy. My grandmother, Carrie REYNOLDS GREENE, was his last surviving child and was born 23 April 1889. I think one of the other Civil War soldiers must have been a good friend of Eleazer's, as a personal photo of Herbert LOTT holding a cat has survived four generations of family and remains part of the family history to this day.
