James L. Tilley. 18 years old. Enrolled 8/1/1862 to serve three years. Mustered in as a private Co. A [125th NY Infantry] 8/27/1862. Surrendered 9/15/1862 and paroled 9/16/1862 at Harper's Ferry, VA. Mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant Co. C, 4/14/1864. Wounded in action 8/14/1864 at Strawberry Plains, VA. Mustered in as 1st lieutenant Co. E 11/28/1864; as captain 3/1/1865. Mustered out with company 6/5/1865 near Alexandria, VA. Commissioned 2nd lieutenant 4/15/1864 with rank from 4/2/1864, vice Donald Gillies promoted. Commissioned 1st lieutenant 12/7/1864, with rank from 11/28/1864, vice E. B. Hull, deceased. Commissioned captain 3/14/1865, with rank from 3/1/1865, vice W. D. Taylor, resigned.
