LAPE, Mary MOTT (Mrs John Joseph LAPE). Mary, wife of John Joseph LAPE, died at West Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, New York, March 19, 1892, aged 67. She was a life-long and thoroughly representative Methodist. Strongly attached to her church, no meeting seemed complete without her presence and cooperation. This notice will recall to many pastors the cordial reception given them at the homestead of Brother and Sister Lape - the house where she was born, where she became a bride, and where, seated at the evening meal, she passed suddenly to her heavenly home. In Sister Lape's character there was a happy combination of strength and sweetness. She was respected by the aged and tenderly loved by the children. Her last work was with the infant-class in Sabbath-school. She was a constant reader of The Christian Advocate. Testimonies to her beautiful and consistent Christian character were given by former pastors, Brothers HARWOOD and LIVINGSTONE, as also by the writer. "Her children arise up to call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." R. J. DAVIES. LAPE, Rev. Thomas. - [NOTE: The Obituary Committee of Hartwick Synod, through the Reverend P. A. Strobel, presented the following tribute to Reverend Thomas Lape (2 November 1801 - 2 January 1879) at its convention in 1879.] Rev. Thomas Lape was born in West Sandlake, Rensselaer county, in 1801, of Lutheran parentage. He early gave his heart to the Savior, and felt called of God to work of the Gospel ministry. He graduated at Union College, Schenectady, and studied theology at Hartwick Seminary. His first pastoral charge was at Johnstown, in Fulton county, where he succeeded Rev. John P. Goertner, who had died after a few years' labor in the ministry. There he toiled successfully for six years, from September 15th, 1829, and then accepted a call to West Camp and Woodstock. In 1837, he removed to Athens and assumed the pastoral charge of Zion's Lutheran Church, which he served for ten years, after which he ministered successively to the Lutheran churches at Waterloo, at Lockport, and then again at West Camp and Woodstock. He was an instructive preacher; a gentle, amiable, cheerful and faithful pastor; a good husband and father; a humble Christian, and a sincere friend. He stood well among the Lutheran clergy of the State. He was one of the founders of the Hartwick Synod, has been its president, and filled other offices of trust and responsibility in this body, having remained connected with it for forty-seven years, and until his death. Our departed brother used his pen effectively, as well as his voice, for the cause of Christ. He compiled the Theological Sketch Book, in two large octavo volumes, which had a large sale. He was the author of a work on Infant Baptism, which has for many years been circulated in the church. About twenty-five years ago he prepared a work on The Atonement, which was published in New York. He was the author of a prize tract on the Statistics of Intemperance, which was published by the National Temperance Society. He also published books entitled The Mourner Comforted and The Early Saved. Some of his sermons were published in The Lutheran Preacher and some in The National Preacher. He also wrote for our church papers and for the Quarterly Review. He spent the passing years industriously and effectively in winning souls for Christ, in earnestly advocating the cause of temperance and of Sunday schools, and in leading an honorable and useful Christian life, which was protracted much beyond the average of ministerial labor. He closed his life peacefully and hopefully. Among his papers is one dated August 1st, 1876, in which he takes a retrospect of life, and says: "In looking over my past life, I bless God for allowing me to preach the gospel of Christ for upwards of forty years. I never felt better than when I was thus engaged. My only regret is that I have not accomplished more for his glory. I have often felt at seasons of the communion that it was actually a foretaste of heaven upon the earth. My prayer to God is 'Not in my innocence I trust, I bow before thee in the dust; And in my Savior's blood alone, I look for mercy at Thy throne.' My epitaph upon the tombstone shall be 'The Children's Friend'. I desire these two hymns sung at my funeral: 'Just As I Am, Without One Plea' and 'Rock of Ages'." The fear of death had been removed. He contemplated his departure with satisfaction; and he died in the faith, full of years and full of Christian hope. He now reaps the reward of a well-spent life, and his works do follow him. LARABEE, Charles W. - Larabee. - In Melrose, Rensselaer County, N. Y., January 24th, 1886, Charles W. Larabee, aged 51 years. Brother Larabee was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Schaghticoke. He was a member of the official board for many years, an active worker in the church, a man of deep and earnest piety, which won for him many warm friends, who came to commingle their sympathies with the bereaved family in their sore affliction. His loss will be deeply felt in his family, in the church, and in the community. He rests from his labors, but his work will follow him. Of such a one it can be truly said, "Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep / From which none ever wakes to weep." A faithful son adds to this paper the following tribute to his departed father:
"Fare thee well, Father; now thou art gone Thou hadst left us in sorrow and sadness to mourn The tomb has enclosed thee, thy spirit is free: 'Twas Jesus Who called thee, and thou didst obey Thy sorrows and troubles and toils are all over And angels have borne thee to Canaan's blest shore. Sweet praises in glory are now their employ: Thou art dwelling in Eden, where none can annoy. We loved thee, dear father, but we'll not repine, For thou art ascended to heaven's bright shrine, O peaceful thy slumber, and sweet be thy rest. Till thou shalt be called to arise from the dust. We will not murmur, we'll not weep for thee: Though with us on earth thy presence cannot be But in the blest regions, where bright seraphs throng We hope soon to meet thee, and join in the song 'All is dark within our dwelling, Lonely are our hearts to-day For the one we loved so dearly Has forever passed away.' Gone but not forgotten." |
LARABEE, Eleazer. - Cooksborough. - Funeral - Church Dedication. - The funeral of Eleazer Larabee, which occurred on Tuesday, was one of the most largely attended that was ever witnessed in Cooksborough. A resident of the vicinity for the past half century, a man of excellent judgment and strict integrity, he was highly esteemed by an immense circle of friends, as a vast cortege assembled from the neighboring towns, to pay the last sad tribute of respect, plainly proved. Starting in life poor and unaided, he had by economy and sound discretion in the management of his affairs, amassed a competency. Besides a widow, Mr. Larabee leaves two sons and one daughter, who inherit in a marked degree the sterling traits of character of their ancestor, all well settled in life, who, together with a host of others that have profited by the wise counsels of the deceased, will long treasure his memory in grateful remembrance.
