FOLEY, Julia (CALLAHAN). - Death of Mrs. Julia Foley, of Irish birth,
and a pioneer of Grafton [Ohio]. - Julia Callahan was born in Ireland, May 5, 1818.
In 1823, when a child of five years, she with her parents came to America and
settled in Troy, N.Y., where her girlhood days were passed. In 1837 she was
married to Morris Foley, also of Irish parentage, but who like herself left
the native land when a child. After remaining four years in Troy, they came
to Ohio and took up their residence in Grafton, where she died of paralysis
on January 30, 1901, aged 82 years, 8 months, and 25 days. Her husband died
a number of years ago. She is survived by nine children, 26 grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren. Her two sons, Martin V. and Thomas B., are
contractors in Cleveland. Her seven daughters are: Mrs. Thomas Powers, of
Ridgefield, IL; Mrs. Ellen Loomis, of Elyria; Mrs. M. J. Doyle, of Sandusky;
Mrs. Julia Fordyce, of Clarksburg, WV; Mrs. Randolph Holmes, of Melmore;
Mrs. Fred Powers, of Unda, IL; and Miss Emma Foley, of Grafton [Ohio].
Mrs. Foley was highly esteemed as a neighbor and friend. Many who read this
will recall her willing assistance and kindly sympathy so freely extended
in times of sickness and affliction. She had the faculty that so few possess,
of knowing just how to do the right thing in the right place, and to her
family she was a tower of strength. While her heart overflowed with love
and devotion, her command was law and duty. Such a mother was naturally
loved by both children and grandchildren by whom she will be greatly missed.
The funeral was held on Saturday morning at the Immaculate Conception church
at Grafton, and her remains were tenderly borne to their last resting place
by her granddaughters, with whom she was a great favorite. Her children
were all present during her illness and at her demise.

FOLEY, Julia (CALLAHAN). - One of the Pioneers: Funeral of
Mrs. Julia Foley at Grafton [Ohio] - Three Generations at the Obsequies. - The
funeral of Mrs. Julia Foley, whose death occurred January 30 at her home in
Grafton, took place last Saturday, February 2, in the church at that place.
It was one of the largest and most impressive funeral services ever held by
Immaculate Conception Church. Rev. P. O. N. Dwyer officiated at the High Mass
of Requiem, and delivered an eloquent eulogy to the memory of the deceased,
whose sturdy and unfaltering Catholicity [sic] in the pioneer days of
Lorain County, and whose virtues as a Christian wife and mother, were alike
worthy of the imitation of her children through generations. Mrs Foley was born
May 5, 1818, in Ireland, coming to America when a mere child, and settling with
her parents in Troy, N. Y. She was married in 1837 and shortly afterwards
went with her husband to Grafton [Ohio], where she has ever since resided.
Mr. Morris Foley preceded her to the grave several years ago. Thus she had
lived to see the country populate about her, the church spread and prosper,
and three generations of children grow up around her. Nine children,
twenty-six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren revere her memory.
She was one of the true pioneer stock which is so fast disappearing. Mrs. Foley's
children are Martin V. and Thomas B. Foley, two well-known contractors of
Cleveland; Mrs. Thos. Powers, of Ridgefield Ill.; Mrs. Ellen Loomis, of Elyria;
Mrs. M. J. Doyle, of Sandusky; Mrs. Julia Fordyce, of Clarksburg, W. Va.; Mrs.
Rudolph Holmes, of Melmore, 0.; Mrs. Fred Powers, of Tinda, Ill.; and Miss Emma
Foley, of Grafton. Most of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered at
the last rites and these and the many friends of the deceased lady filled
the Grafton church. Six of the grandchildren, Miss M. Agnes Doyle, Miss Julia A. Loomis,
Miss Clara C. Doyle, Miss Eva Holmes, Miss Caroline Fordyce and Miss Elizabeth M. Doyle,
acted as pall-bearers. Misses Ernestine Ludwig and Nellie Sullivan, of Cleveland,
assisted the choir, and Miss Julia Doyle sang Wamelink's "Ave Maria" in a very
touching manner. (published 8 February 1901 in the Catholic Universe Bulletin;

FOLYARD, John - At Troy, [Rensselaer County] NY, 29th ult. [that is, 29 March 1842], Mr. John Folyard, a revolutionary soldier, aged 99 years. Mr. F. was a worthy citizen of this city, and familiarly known as "Seventy-Six". He served the country through the whole war of the revolution, as well as that of 1812, in which last he was engaged in four pitched battles. He was one of the soldiers that conquered Burgoyne, and witnessed his surrender at Saratoga [17 October 1777]. He was pensioner of the United States, and well deserved his pittance at the hand of the government he had helped to establish. A Whig of the Revolution, he was true to his principles, a Whig of 1840, he deposited his vote for the "Hero of Tippecanoe" [William Henry Harrison, who became the ninth president of the USA]. The last time the writer of this saw him, he was in good health and in the full exercise of all his mental faculties and expressed a wish that he "might be permitted to live to give his vote for one more President as good as "Old Tip", said he, "I die content, for I trust I am prepared." Thus one after another of the heroes of '76 are passing away. Let their virtues live in grateful remembrance by those whose liberty and independence they so largely contributed to achieve.

A shadow rests upon our home,
We miss your smiling face;
Wherever we turn, wherever we look,
We see your vacant place.
To your graveside we ofter wander,
And picture your face so dear.
In silence we stand in sorrow
For the one we loved so dear.
