DOWNING, Marvin B. - MARVIN B. DOWNING STRUCK BY
FREIGHT TRAIN, WHILE WALKING HOME FROM HOOSICK ON THE RAILROAD TRACK. -
Marvin B. Downing, a prominent newswriter of this village [Hoosick Falls] for many years
and one of the best-known men of the vicinity, was killed by the cars on the west-bound
track of the Boston and Maine railroad near the Haswell curve, about a mile and
a half south of this village [Hoosick Falls], shortly after noon Sunday. As
local correspondent
of the Albany Knickerbocker-Press and Troy Record, he had gone to
Hoosick in the morning to report the services held in All Saints' Church in
commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of the ordination of
Rev. Dr. E. D. Tibbits as a priest. He made the journey on foot, taking the hill road.
After the services had ended, he started for home, and as he had found the road
very bad on his way to Hoosick, it is presumed that he decided to return by way
of the railroad as affording much easier walking. It was within a few minutes of
1:00 o'clock when he reached the Haswell curve, where the east-bound and
west-bound tracks of the Boston and Maine railroad run quite close to each other.
An east-bound freight train was passing; Mr. Downing turned to watch it [and] failed
to hear the freight train which came around the curve on the track behind him,
although the engineer blew a continual warning. Seeing that the man was unaware of
his danger, the engineer applied the emergency brakes but was unable to prevent
the locomotive from striking the victim, who was hurled nearly one hundred feet by
the impact. The train was stopped as soon as possible, and the trainmen went back
to where the unfortunate man lay unconscious but yet breathing. A work train came
along just then, and Mr. Downing was carried to the caboose, and both trains
hastened to this village, and Dr. John T. Cahill was called. Before the physician
reached the station, however, Mr. Downing had breathed his last; in fact, it was
said by those who helped to carry him from the car into the passenger station
that he was dead before they took him from the car. Coroner Shaw, who was notified
of the accident, ordered the body to be taken to the undertaking rooms of W. E. Robson.
The news of the fatality spread quickly through the village and caused a great shock
to all, as Mr. Downing was greatly liked by everybody. Marvin B. Downing was born
in Pittstown [Rensselaer Co NY] about 51 years ago, the son of Roger A. and Mary
Downing. His early years were passed on the farm of his parents, and later he became
a school teacher and taught in the district schools of Pittstown, Raymertown,
Boyntonville, Potter Hill, Eagle Bridge, North Hoosick and Hoosick [all in Rensselaer
Co NY]. In connection with his school work, he had for many years been a newswriter
and, since coming to this village about eighteen years ago, had acted as local
correspondent for Troy and Albany newspapers. For several years he was connected
with the Hoosick Falls Democrat, and also had done special work for the
Standard. When the Second District Draft Board of this county was
organized, Mr. Downing was made clerk of the secretary, a position he filled most
efficiently up to the time of his sudden death. Mr. Downing was also a member of
the Lutheran Church of Raymertown, but during his residence in Hoosick Falls he
had divided his attention between the Presbyterian, Baptist and Methodist churches.
He was a steady attendant at church and Sunday school. He was an active member of
the Pittstown Sunday School Association, having been its president and secretary,
and also was secretary of the Hoosick Sunday School Union. He was prominent in
Odd Fellow circles, having been Noble Grand of Raymertown Lodge and also
District Deputy of Rensselaer-Washington District. For some years past, he had
been a member of the United Lodge of this village and also of Golden Crown Rebekah Lodge.
Mr. Downing was also a member of Hoosick Grange and, at its last annual meeting,
was elected secretary of that organization. He was an ardent worker for the cause
of prohibition and for years had been closely identified with the town and county
organizations. During the last campaign of the party, Mr. Downing was the county's
chairman. Mr. Downing's life was one of ceaseless activity, but he was never too
busy to do a favor or help a friend; in fact, it may be truthfully said that the
keynote of his character was faithful service. The nearest surviving relatives
are a half-sister, Mrs. Carrie Douglas of Waterford [Saratoga Co NY]; a nephew,
Irving Douglas of Troy; a grandniece, Mrs. Albert Myers of Troy; and six cousins,
Ellis and Edgar Downing, Mrs. Adelbert Austin, Mrs. Hattie Smith, Mrs. Alta Russell,
all residents of Pittstown, and George Downing of Melrose [Rensselaer Co NY].
The funeral was held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the mortuary chapel at
Robson's undertaking rooms, Rev. Frank T. Love officiating. There was a large
attendance of friends, and delegations from United Lodge of Odd Fellows, Golden
Crown Rebekah Lodge and Hoosick Grange were present. There was a profusion of
beautiful floral tributes from the various organizations of which Mr. Downing had
been so closely affiliated with [sic] in life. Mr. Love paid an earnest and
loving tribute to the high character and worthy life of his departed friend and
spoke feelingly of the personality he had found and cherished in his associations
with this dear friend, who has gone to his heavenly reward. The burial service of
the Odd Fellows Order was conducted under the direction of Raymond Roys, Noble
Grand of United Lodge, No. 509, the beautiful ritual being recited by the chaplain,
Frederick Pickering. The remains were taken to Maple Grove cemetery and placed
in the vault. In the spring the body will be taken to Boytonville for burial.
