CANNON, Ibri. - Death of a Venerable Clergyman - Ibri CANNON, fifty years ago a pioneer Methodist preacher in Vermont, Northern New York and Canada, died yesterday at his residence, on Jacob street, at the advanced age of eighty-three years. Mr. CANNON continued his ministrations among the Indians and sparsely settled white inhabitants of the frontier for many years, and until his health broke down under the hardships of pioneer life. He was the companion of Rev. Orin PIER, some time since deceased, in many long and arduous journeys. "The groves are God's temples," and in them Mr. CANNON preached from the Book of Life to the ignorant and rude frontiersmen, who came many miles to hear him. He was an earnest anti-slavery man all his life, and when the Methodist Church failed to respond to his views upon this subject some years ago, he left that denomination and joined the Wesleyans, who were more outspoken in treating of the great wrong of the age. Mr. CANNON had lived in Troy about twenty-five years, and was greatly respected for the purity of his life, the uprightness of his intentions, and his earnest, Christian traits of character. CANNON, Ibri. - A Veteran Gone. - Rev. Ibri CANNON passed to immortality from the City of Troy, N.Y., June 22, 1866, aged 82 years. I had known Bro. CANNON for the last 45 years. He was a good man, and never tarnished his Christian character through his pilgrimage. He united with the Wesleyans at the beginning of our denominational existence, and died in the faith he had cherished for so many years past. I saw him and his excellent wife, the past Spring, and enjoyed a most delightful session with them, in conversation and prayer. I then expected this would be our last interview on Earth, and so it proved. I am glad to be assured that this old and faithful laborer in the Lord's vineyard has found "his long sought rest."

"Servant of God, well done!
Thy glorious warfare's past;
The battle's fought, the race is won,
And thou art crown'd at last."
C. Prindle. July 26, 1866. (name and date of newspaper not noted; submitted to this website by Tish Lombardelli)
