The following list is an index of claims presented by residents of Rensselaer County
to the State of New York for payment of military clothing and equipment provided by
individuals who volunteered, or were drafted by the Governor, for service in the
Militia of the State of New York during the War of 1812. These claims were for clothing
and equipment which were depreciated, worn out, lost and destroyed for which the soldier
had not received payment. Information is presented as follows:
Claim number, name of applicant, residence of applicant and amount allowed.
By an interpretation of the original authorizations, only the claims of those who performed
duty in the service of the State were paid. Subsequent legislation provided payment for
those who were detached into the service of the United States, provided there was reimbursement
to the State by the United States. Some additional claims were paid in good faith by the State,
but as late as 1885, 17,228 claims were unpaid. Records indicate that these claims were never paid.
