John A. Weatherwax
Family Bible

Information on this page was transcribed from the original Bible of John Weatherwax and was contributed to this website by Wayne E. Weatherwax. Wayne writes, "This Bible has excellent provenance. It is located in the holdings of the Rensselaer County Historical Society of Troy, NY. The collected papers of John Peer WEATHERWAX, in Box #12, contain the Bible. All pages are intact and are still bound within the Bible. The Bible contains the family records of John A. WEATHERWAX (1794-1879) and his wife, Catherine AVERY. Published by W. H. Merriam in 1846 at Troy, N. Y., the Bible is clearly within the lifetime of its original owner."

Transcriber's notes on Bible ownership: It appears that the original owner could be either John A. Weatherwax (2946) 1794-1879 or his son John A. Weatherwax (3660) 1841-1916. What is clear is that the Bible remained with the family from as early as 1841 until 1991. The earliest inscriptions could have been done either by John (2946) or by his son John (3660) or by both. There are clearly two different writing/recording styles in use. It appears that on the death of John (3660), the family Bible then passed to his son Freeman Cooper Weatherwax (5088) 1868-1953. Freeman in turn passed it on to his son John Peer Weatherwax (6698) 1904-1991. John P. Weatherwax (6698) retained the family Bible in his possession until his own death in 1991. On his death, all of his personal family papers were donated to the Rensselaer County Historical Society. There is another family Bible in the same box, Box #12; that Bible relates to the PEER family.
