Dorothy W. Sabin Was Retired Nurse -
MECHANICVILLE - Dorothy W. SABIN, 80, of Kennedy Apartments, Main Street,
died Thursday, January 25 [1990] at Samaritan Hospital, Troy.
Mrs. Sabin was born [28 May 1909] in Schaghticoke, daughter of the
late Alford P. and Alice R. LESSON VAN WERT. She had been a resident
of Mechanicville for the past nine years. Previously she had lived in Troy.
Mrs. Sabin had been a licensed practical nurse for 17 years at
Van Rensselaer Manor in North Greenbush. She retired in 1976.
She was a member and past president of the Troy Stamp Club.
Mrs. Sabin was the widow of William B. SABIN, Jr., who died in 1976.
Survivors include a sister, Katherine O. VAN WERT, and a brother,
Kenneth G. VAN WERT, both of Halfmoon. Funeral services were conducted
on Saturday, January 27 from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home
and from St. George's Episcopal Church, both in Clifton Park.
Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke. Contributions in
Mrs. Sabin's memory may be made to St. Margaret's House and Hospital for Babies,
27 Hackett Blvd., Albany or to Samaritan Hospital Foundation,
School for Nursing Scholarship Fund, Troy.

SABOSKI, Margaret M. - Margaret Saboski -
HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. - Margaret M. Saboski, 101, wife of the late Edward F. Saboski,
died May 6, 2006, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center, where she had resided since 2004.
Born in Hoosick Falls on March 11, 1905, and raised there, she attended
St. Mary's Academy. She spent her early years working in New York City,
where she met her husband, Ed, who, coincidentally, was also born and raised
in Hoosick Falls. They returned to that small town to build their family
and enjoy life in the country. They both lived for their family and loved traveling
to Hawaii and spending many summer vacations fishing off York Beach and Perkins Cove.
She, beautiful in body and soul to the end, is survived by her two daughters,
Dr. Eleanor Saboski of Kennebunkport and Mrs. Arlene Wysocki of Hoosick Falls;
Arlene's husband, Jack Wysocki; four grandchildren and their spouses and children,
Jay and Megan Wysocki and their boys Eli and Caleb of Pittsburgh, Pa.,
Jeff and Vicki Wysocki and their boys Josh, Chad and Corey of Hoosick Falls,
Jan Wysocki and her husband Steven Wilson and their children Alden and Lea
of New York City, and Joy and Ed Wright and their son Garrett of Hoosick Falls.
Funeral services, Mass and burial were held on May 10, from the
Immaculate Conception Parish in Hoosick Falls. Memorial contributions in her memory
may be sent to Hoosick Falls Health Center, Hoosick Falls, NY 12090.

SANSONE, Darlene L. (Mrs Harry A. ROSE). - SARATOGA SPRINGS - Darlene L. ROSE, 56, of Pyramid Pines Estates, died Thursday [27 December 2001] at Saratoga Hospital, after being stricken on Christmas Day. Born and raised in Rensselaer, she was born August 16, 1945, daughter of the late Anthony SANSONE and the late Lillian SNYDER; and [stepdaughter of the late] Dominick SPENZIERO. Mrs. Rose lived in Saranac Lake for over 30 years, before moving to Saratoga Springs in 1995. Mrs. Rose was a childcare specialist at Vanderhyden Hall of Rensselaer County for six years and had previously worked as transportation specialist at North Star Industries and Franklin County ARC, both of Saranac Lake. An avid bingo player, she also enjoyed dirt-track racing and collecting miniature elephants. Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Harry A. ROSE; three sons, Randall (and Heidi RAMSEY) FAFARD of Ballston Spa, Andrew (and Stephanie) ROSE of Saranac Lake and Dominick FAFARD of Saratoga Springs; six grandchildren, Dominick, Capri and Ford FAFARD, Jacqulynn and Cassitty ROSE and Billy ALLEN. She was predeceased by brothers Frank, William and Millard SANSONE. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a. m. at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S. Main St., Mechanicville. Burial will be in Bloomingrove Rural Cemetery, North Greenbush, NY. Calling hours at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 to 11 a. m. SAUNDERS, William ("Bob"). -
William Saunders Was Village Mayor - SCHAGHTICOKE -
Village Mayor William "Bob" SAUNDERS, 64, of 5 South Main Street,
died suddenly Sunday, September 4 [1988] at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy.
Mr. Saunders was born [23 May 1924] in Troy, son of the late
William A. and Mary E. GLEASON SAUNDERS. He was a graduate of
Hoosic Valley High School. Mr. Saunders was elected mayor of the
Village of Schaghticoke in March, 1987. He had served previously for six years
as a village trustee. Mr. Saunders enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1941
and retired from active duty in 1962 with the rank of gunnery sergeant.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He also served
ten years in the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve. Mr. Saunders was a member of
"The Chosin Few", a Marine Corp engagement during Korea;
the Valley Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the Schaghticoke American Legion Post,
and the Experimental Aircraft Association. Mr. Saunders was a member of the
Troy Local Carpenters' Union. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church
in Schaghticoke. Mr. Saunders and his brother, Richard L. SAUNDERS,
owned and operated Phelan's Boat Marina in Stillwater in the 1960s.
Survivors include his wife, Irene P. KELONDIS SAUNDERS;
a son, William A. SAUNDERS III of Schaghticoke;
two daughters, Amy K. SAUNDERS and Michele A. SAUNDERS of Schaghticoke;
two brothers, John W. SAUNDERS of Mechanicville and Richard L. SAUNDERS
of Schaghticoke; and a sister, Mary M. MCSWEENEY of Hadley.
A full military funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 7 at 9:30 a. m. from
the White-Sanvidge Funeral Home, 1 State Street, Valley Falls, and a
Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated at 10 a. m. from
St. John the Baptist Church. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery,
Arlington, Va. Contributions in Mr. Saunders's memory may be made to the

SCHERP, Jacob. - New York - We hear from Livingston's Manor that
one Mr. Jacob Scherp, a noted trader and farmer there, on the 16 of February last,
had the misfortune to be drowned in Livingston's Creek, by the stumbling of his horse.
His body was found some days after by his own son on a small shoal in the mouth

SCHNEIDER, Kenneth J. – Kenneth J. SCHNEIDER, 57, of Kennedy Towers, Troy, a World War II veteran who had been employed as a mechanic at the Watervliet Arsenal for 20 years, died Sunday, June 23, 1968 at St Mary's Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Schneider was born in Troy and attended Catholic Central High School. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, Troy. He served four years in the South Pacific during World War II. Son of the late Peter SCHNEIDER and Louise MILTZ of Troy, he is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Louise SCHNEIDER and Kathleen SCHNEIDER, and by two sisters, Mrs. Ralph J. (Gertrude) GERMAIN and Mrs. Frederick H. (Bertha) CRANNAGE, all of Troy. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a. m. from McLoughlin Funeral Home, Glen and Sixth Avenues, and at 11:00 a. m. from St. Patrick's Church, where a Requiem Mass will be offered. SCHNEIDER, Peter. – Peter SCHNEIDER, 87, retired stationary engineer, died at his home, 455 10th Street, Troy, yesterday afternoon, after a long illness. He was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France September 24, 1866, and came to Troy in 1890. He was employed for many years at the old Isengart Brewery and the Quandt Brewing Co. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Patrick's Church. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ralph J. GERMAIN and Mrs. Fred H. CRANNAGE; a son, Kenneth J. SCHNEIDER; and three grandchildren, Joyce Ann GERMAIN, Robert P. CRANNAGE and Patricia Ann CRANNAGE, all of Troy. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a. m. from the McLoughlin Funeral Home, Glen and 6th Avenues, and from St. Patrick's Church, where a Requiem High Mass will be offered at 10 a. m. SENECAL, Mary E. (Mrs. Stephen ZAYACHEK) - Zayachek, Mary E. - MECHANICVILLE - Mrs. Mary E. ZAYACHEK, 96, of Arnold Ave., died Tuesday morning, March 3, 2009 at Albany Medical Center, after a brief illness. Born [19 January 1913] in the town of Stillwater [Saratoga County, NY], daughter of the late Elijah SENECAL and Claudia OVEROCKER SENECAL, Mary and family lived in Mechanicville [Saratoga County, NY] most of their lives. A homemaker who had worked as a presser with the former Marshall Ray Co. of Troy for many years, she enjoyed needlepoint and gardening but mostly taking care of her local grandchildren, their families and also her many pets. She was a member of the Assumption-St. Paul Church and the Mechanicville Senior Citizens. Mary had an infectious smile, an upbeat attitude about life, and a love for all her extended family. She was called "Aunt Mary" by many, many families in the Mechanicville area. Her husband, Stephen ZAYACHEK, her daughter, Rose THRANE, and her son, Stephen ZAYACHEK, all predeceased her. Survivors include two daughters, Mary CAULFIELD of Averill Park [town of Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, NY] and Shirley ZAYACHEK of Troy; 12 grandchildren, Christine THRANE, James THRANE (Anna), Mary Ann THRANE, Rosemarie THRANE, Thomas CAULFIELD (Kathy), William CAULFIELD, Michael CAULFIELD (Leslie), Mary Ann RALSTON (David), Stephen ZAYACHEK (Joyce), David ZAYACHEK, Susan CROWTHER (Paul), and Wendy DEMARCO (Joe), along with 22 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was also predeceased by her sisters, Emma STOCKWELL, Mabel LEMMERMAN, Irene DONEGAN and Florence MOREY; by a brother, James SENECAL; and by a dear friend and niece, Helen HORN. SHARP, Leonard. - DEATH RESULTED FROM BURNS. - Leonard Sharp, for
nearly forty years, a butter-milk peddler on Ida Hill, died at his residence,
in Wynantskill, Saturday. Mr. Sharp had been burning brush on his farm last
Friday afternoon when his clothes caught fire, and before the flames could
be extinguished, his body had been severely burned. The burns resulted in

SHARPE, Buddington F. - FORMER SHERIFF SHARPE
EXPIRES. - Succumbs. - Buddington F. Sharpe - PROMINENT G O P LEADER ILL WEEK,
DIES IN HOSPITAL. - Was Owner of Grove Extensively Used for Outings of Area
Organizations - Former Sheriff Buddington Sharpe, for many years
one of the most prominent residents of Rensselaer County, died in Samaritan
Hospital at 12:35 p. m. today. Although Mr Sharpe had been in poor health for
some time, his illness became critical a week ago today and he was removed to
the hospital. He was 64 years of age. Mr Sharpe was seriously ill last summer
and spent several weeks in the hospital. He was able to overcome the illness,
however, and return to his North Greenbush home. He was born on the old Sharpe
homestead in North Greenbush July 27, 1874, son of Marshall H. and Mary Van Husen
Sharpe. His great-great-great-grandfather, Nicholas Sharpe, settled in North
Greenbush in the latter part of the 17th century and built the first Sharpe
residence on the site of the present homestead. Nicholas Sharpe became a
prosperous and influential resident of the rising community. The Sharpe homestead
was handed down from father to son until at length it came into the hands of
Buddington Sharpe. - Former Peace Justice. - Mr. Sharpe's father was a
farmer and justice of the peace. His mother was a member of an old Dutch family
which settled in New York in the early days of colonization. Buddington Sharpe
was educated in the district school of North Greenbush and during his spare
time helped his father on the farm. He later was graduated from Troy Business
College, then returned home where, until his father's death, he assisted him
with management of the farm lands. After his father's death Mr. Sharpe
established a real estate and insurance business. The venture prospered and
he opened an office in Troy in addition to an office in Rensselaer. He was
instrumental in developing many favorably situated properties in the county.
He also had for years the agency for the Ford Motors at Rensselaer and dealt
in farm and harvesting machinery. Mr Sharpe never gave up the homestead or his
interest in farming problems. He converted the general farm into a dairy farm
and his pure blooded prize winning cattle were exhibited at many agricultural
shows and county fairs. "Bud" Sharpe's grove on the farm estate was widely
used for outings of Troy Area organizations. Probably more outings have been
held at Sharpe's grove in the last decade than at any similar spot in the
county. The former sheriff was a genial host. - Elected Sheriff in 1918. - In
politics Mr Sharpe was a Republican. He was elected sheriff of Rensselaer
County in 1918 and served for three years. He had previously held office as
county supervisor from the town of North Greenbush having been elected in 1907
and having served continuously for eight years. He was a lifelong exponent
of better country roads and increased standards of agriculture production.
Mr. Sharpe was a member of Silver Brook Lodge I. O. O. F. of Wynantskill and
the Kiwanis Club. A lifelong member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Defreestville
he had served as librarian for many years. He is survived by his wife the
former Miss Jennie Garrison whom he married Feb 20 1902 at Rensselaer and a son

SHARPE, Frederick. - DIED. - Suddenly near Wynantskill on
Saturday morning 12th Frederick Sharpe in the 76th year of his age. I am
well aware that obituary notices have fastened upon the public mind a
species of incredulity: because of the glowing language in which the
life & character of certain individuals have been portrayed; but which
will in no wise detract from the fact that in the death of this individual
the community have lost an honest and upright citizen in the cause of
charity & benevolence a generous & ardent supporter of the poor & destitute,
a liberal & constant patron of the bereaved widow & children, a kind husband
and father, and the church of Wynantskill with which he stood connected & of
which he became a member soon after its first organization, a judicious councilor,
an active zealous & efficient member & liberal supporter. Truly his example
in all social, civil & religious matters was one worthy of imitation. If he was
in any instance guilty of practical error it was on the side of virtue: so that
his whole life since espousal of Christ was a comment on the power of divine
grace as expressed in the word PSALMIST: ["Mark the perfect man & behold the

his residence in Wynantskill after an illness of two weeks. He was a member
of the First Lutheran Church at West Sand Lake, Silver Brook Lodge, I. O. O. F., and
was a Mason. The survivors include his wife, who was Miss Alida Barringer; a son
Adelmer Sharpe, and a sister, Miss Eveline Sharpe. The funeral will be held
Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence and at 3 o'clock from the
church at West Sand Lake where Rev. D. B. Worman will officiate. Interment will

Man at 89. - William Arnout Sharpe is Gone - Close of a Long and Eventful Life - Many
Years Ago Resided Here - Was a Prominent Mason. - With the death of
William Arnout Sharpe Tuesday at the home of his son, Dr. John G. Sharpe at Dover, Del.,
closes a long and eventful life of one who many years ago was a resident of this
city [Troy, NY] and where he was a well known and highly respected citizen.
He many times visited Troy after leaving here, and was always delighted to tell
about the things that took place here in the long ago. He remembered many people
who lived here more than half a century ago, and could tell of the changes that
he had noticed in the city. - Of Revolutionary Ancestors. - William Arnout
Sharpe was born November 12, 1823, near Syracuse, N. Y., in a log house on the
land granted to his maternal grandfather,
John Burges, who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His father was
John Sharpe, son of Jacob Sharpe, of the family of that name which settled
about 1730 on the Van Rensselaer Patent, which included the site of the
present city of Troy. - Fond of Adventure. - After a boyhood and
young manhood spent in the usual pursuits of the period, consisting mostly
in tilling the sloping hillsides of the family homestead, he started at the
age of twenty to secure better health, and accompanying adventure, through
the medium of a voyage to the Mediterranean Sea. A commission from a friend
to buy an engineering instrument caused him to stop at Troy, October 4, 1843,
where he searched diligently, and finally found, the instrument shop of
Oscar Hanks, corner of Fifth and Elbow streets, where, in depositing the
order for execution, his fine knowledge of the science of mathematics and
the rudiments of civil engineering so strongly appealed to William Gurley,
the foreman, that he was easily induced to end the trip to the Mediterranean
by accepting a position with Mr. Hanks, and undertaking to learn the
manufacture of his various specialties, at the magnificent salary of
$30 per year, "and board." Mr. Gurley soon after, formed a partnership with
a Mr. Phelps for the prosecution of the same business, and young Sharpe
cast his destinies with the new firm, remaining with them for several
years. - His Love for Masonry. - Freemasonry may be like some other
attributes of character - inherent - and as he was inspired by the rugged
faith of both a father and grandfather, who had gone through the tumultuous
years following 1826, with true Masonic fortitude, he easily found a way
to present his petition to Apollo Lodge, No. 13, through the kindly offices
of Stephen C. Leggett, the Master, and in that Lodge was raised to the
Sublime Degree of a Master Mason, May 30, 1851. There was little to note
in Masonic circles that impressed his mind in those days, beyond the fact
that Apollo and King Solomon's Primitive, No. 91, were the only Lodges
working in Troy, and that John S. Perry was the moving spirit in founding
Mt. Zion Lodge, No. 311, and recalls the dedication of their first hall;
also the Masonic services at the memorial to General Wool, at Dr. Bemen's
church. - Left Troy. - Commercial ambition took him to Schenectady
in 1854, shortly after his exaltation in Apollo chapter, No. 48, R. A. M.,
where he affiliated with St. George's Lodge, No. 6, and remembered well the
day when Mr. Perry and his picked team went there from Troy, at his
solicitation and exemplified the work in the time-honored third degree,
as Troy understood it. From St. George's he attended the funeral of
Chancellor Walworth at Saratoga, and met many Lodges from all that section
at that largely attended function. - Back to His Old Home. - The call
of the home life and old associations lured him back to the vicinity of
Syracuse, where he affiliated with Mt. Horeh Lodge, No. 170, at Borodino, N. Y.,
but its distant location induced him to subsquently (1862) become a Charter
Member of Morning Star Lodge, No. 524, working at Marcellus, N. Y. and to
this Lodge he belonged constantly thereafter. Affiliation with Charles H.
Platt Chapter, No. 247, Skaneatles, N. Y., followed in time, and during a
residence of thirty years in Syracuse, he became a member of Central City
Council, No. 13, R. and S. M., and Central City Commandery, No. 25, K. T.
He was the dean of the Masonic Veteran's Association of that city, whence
he moved to Dover, Delaware, in 1897, having been admitted to that association
in 1886. - A Remarkable March. - In 1895 at Boston during the
triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment, Knights Templar of the United
States, Mr. Sharpe was 72 years of age, yet he insisted on marching with his
commandery over the entire line of march which he did with Central City
Commandery of Syracuse. It was a remarkable march for a man of his age.
Down to the time of his death he was active both in mind and body. He thought
nothing in the late years of his life making trips to various parts of the
country, even though he had to go alone. He had a remarkable memory and
could recall the distant past with wonderful accuracy. He was a life-long
Democrat and prided himself as a citizen, that he had cast a vote at
every Presidential election since his first, in 1844. As a Mason he
outranked the Masonic fraternity in the state of Delaware and also the
Masonic Veteran's Association in this state to which he had been a
member many years. - His Funeral. - For years he had resided
with his son, Dr. Sharpe of Dover, Del. Funeral services were held
Thursday at Dover under the auspices of Union Lodge of that city and
then the remains were taken to Marcellus where final services were
conducted Friday by Morning Star Lodge, No. 524 and were attended
by many members of the fraternity from Syracuse and other places. He was
buried at Amber in the plot where his ancestors have been laid successively

SHERIDAN, Lucille FILM. - Sheridan, Lucille (Film) - JACUMBA, Calif. - Lucille (FILM) SHERIDAN,
77, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at home after a long illness. With her were her husband
Terrence Craig, and her three daughters, Tricia FITZPATRICK, Kelly STEELE, and Tess CHANDLER.
She is survived by other children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lucille was the oldest
daughter of the late Agnes and William FILM, formerly of Eagle Mills. Relatives in this area
include her brother, William FILM, and his wife, Helen, of Saratoga; Betty FILM of Colonie;
Shirley FILM MADSEN of Troy; and Olive FILM KELLER of Newburgh. She is also survived by many
nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be private at the request of the family.
Interment will be in Manzanita Indian Reservation. Contributions in her memory can

SLITER, Edwin Albert. - Edwin Albert SLITER, one of the
best-known farmers of Rensselaer County, died last night [March 21, 1914] at his
home, Inglenook Farm, at Luther, in the town of East Greenbush, in the 72nd year of
his age. Mr Sliter, who conducted a fruit farm, had resided on the place where he
died for 70 yrs and being an expert in the growing of fruit made a great success
of this business. He was deeply interested in the affairs of the town, but although
honored by nominations by the Democrats for various offices, he always refused to accept.
He was a member of the Second Lutheran Church at West Sand Lake and held the office of
deacon for several years and was superintendent of the Sunday school. He was a past
master of East Schodack Lodge F & AM. His death will occasion regret throughout the
vicinity in which he lived. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Alida PAYNE,
and a son, John P. SLITER, of this city. The funeral will take place from the

DAURIO, 78, of Poplar Avenue, Valley Falls died Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy [Rensselaer County, NY] surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 25, 1930 in Schaghticoke [Rensselaer County, NY] and was a daughter of the late Paul A. SMITH and Margaret HAWLEY. She was the widow of Peter DAURIO, who died in 1997. Predeceased by her daughter Joan CHAPKO (Darl) and by siblings Paul SMITH, William SMITH, Catherine SMITH, Dorothy SMITH, Margaret CLUM and Helen STALTER. She worked as a secretary for General Electric and as a seasonal worker for the NYS Tax & Finance Dept. A communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Schaghticoke. A member of the Valley Falls Ladies' Auxiliary. She loved crossword puzzles, as well as jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid reader. She enjoyed watching the Yankees play ball and loved bird watching. She mostly enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted wife and mother. Survivors include sons Joseph P. DAURIO (Tai ARNOLD) of Wilton and Jeffery T. DAURIO (Deborah) of Johnsonville; daughters Jean E. FRISINO (Scott) of Johnsonville, Janice L. (Eric) BRENENSTUHL (Eric) of Melrose, and Jacalyn A. DAURIO-RIEL (Mark) of Schaghticoke; son-in-law Darl CHAPKO of Valley Falls; her brother, Kenneth SMITH (Gerri) of Gansevoort; and her sister, Wilma WARREN (Robert) of Johnsonville. and native of Schaghticoke [born 6 March 1908], died Saturday night

She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Felix LESSON and
was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Mechanicville.
In recent years, her home was at 84 Delaware St., Albany.
Surviving are her husband, Jerry SMITH; a brother, Felix LESSON
of Mechanicville; five sisters, Mrs. Florence CALHOUN
and Mrs. Richard STOCKWELL of Mechanicville;
Mrs. Roy FITZGERALD of Ballston Spa, Mrs. John DOCKENDORF
of Lake George, and Mrs. Clarabelle HORN of Coxsackie;

Mrs. Tilla VIALL SPAULDING, 83 [sic], of 1820 Wagner St,
who died Monday [19 October 1976] after a long illness, will be held

She worked as a manicurist at Union Depot for 20 years and was

she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn BANBURY of Schenectady
and Mrs. Mary GLEASON of Texas; a brother, Richard VIALL of Schaghticoke;

of 19 East Street, died Monday, October 9 [1989] at
Leonard Hospital, Troy, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Lesson was born in Troy, daughter of the late
Thomas J. and Catherine CONNELL SPILLANE.
She was educated in Troy schools. Mrs. Lesson had been employed
by the Rensselaer County Department for the Aging as site manager
for the Home Meals Service. Previously, she had been a machine operator
for the former Robert Reis Manufacturing Company in Waterford.
Mrs. Lesson was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.
She was a member of the Schaghticoke Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary
and of the Charles Waldron American Legion Post Ladies' Auxiliary.
Mrs. Lesson was the widow of Alfred L. LESSON.
Survivors include a son, Robert F. LESSON, and a daughter,
Anna Mae LESSON, both of Schaghticoke; two brothers,
Stephen SPILLANE of Troy and James SPILLANE of Clifton Park;
and a grandson. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, October 12
from the Chase Funeral Home, 173 Main Street, and from
St. John the Baptist Church, where a Mass of Christian Death and Burial
was offered. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery.

Maureen Stapleton, the Emmy, Tony and Academy Award-winning actress who
died early Monday [13 March 2006] in Lenox, Mass., was born and raised in
South Troy. Stapleton, who grew up on First Street and caught the movie bug
in the five theaters then in operation in the city, won the "triple crown" of
acting awards: the Oscar, the Emmy and the Tony, and had a 350-seat theater
at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) named in her honor Dec. 15, 1981.
STEDMAN, Dorothy VOGEL. - Dorothy Vogel Stedman.
Knox - Dorothy Vogel Stedman of Thatcher Park Road died Sunday, May 12 at her home.
Mrs Stedman was born in Rensselaer and worked for Siena College in Loudonville
at one time. Survivors include her husband, W. S. STEDMAN; a son,
William GUSHUE Jr of Clifton Park [Saratoga County, NY]; a daughter,
June Marie GILES of Brunswick; and a sister, Peggy FORTE of East Greenbush.
Mrs Stedman donated her remains to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program.

STOCKWELL, Robert P. - MECHANICVILLE - Robert P. STOCKWELL, 55, of Brightman Road,
died suddenly Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at his home, after being stricken. Born in Troy
[Rensselaer County, NY], July 8, 1953, son of the late Richard STOCKWELL, Sr. and
Bernadine LESSON, Bob was educated and lived in Mechanicville all his life.
A carpenter, Bob was co-owner, along with his partner and trusted friend,
George Alonzo of Mechanicville, of Dixie Construction Co. for many years.
In the past, he also worked for Kingsway Arms and Charles Dyer Construction companies.
A sportsman, Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing, snowmobiling, and riding his Harley.
A friendly guy with a world of friends, Bob loved being a father and cherished
his grandkids. An active member of the Sons of the American Legion, Post 91,
Mechanicville, and a member of the Post's newly formed Honor Guard,
Bob loved the time spent at the Legion, whether working on a construction project,
or playing darts, pool or horseshoes, or just visiting with friends.
Survivors include his three daughters, Shana GAILOR, April STOCKWELL and
Jessica STOCKWELL-KENNEDY, all of Mechanicville; a stepson, Michael CORP of East Greenbush;
two granddaughters, Sierra CARBONE and Payton CORP; a grandson, Jesse James KENNEDY;
two sisters, Bernice Ann (Richard) ROSE of Mechanicville and Sharon (Ray) MANN
of Bennington, VT; three brothers, Richard J. (Bud) STOCKWELL, Jr. and
William (Wendy) STOCKWELL, both of Mechanicville, and Mark STOCKWELL of Bennington;
his companion and "buttercup", Angela AUSTIN of Mechanicville; and his former wife,
Debbie CIMINO STOCKWELL; along with nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held
on Tuesday at 7 p. m. at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.

Elizabeth R. LESSON STODGELL of Chestnut Street died Friday
[30 March 1990] at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a long illness.
Mrs. Stodgell was born [13 September 1920] and educated in Schaghticoke.
She retired in 1984 after more than 25 years as a cook for the
Hoosic Valley Central School District. She previously was an
assistant postal clerk for the US Postal Service branch in Schaghticoke.
Mrs. Stodgell was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church
and a member of the church Altar Rosary Society. Survivors include her husband,
Robert G. STODGELL; a daughter, Patricia A. GARRAHAN of Schaghticoke;
a son, Robert F. STODGELL of Schaghticoke; a sister, Mabel BEVIS of Schaghticoke;
five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. The services will be held
at 9:30 a. m. Monday in the rectory of St. John the Baptist Church,
6 S. Main St., and at 10 a. m. in the church. Burial will be in
St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p. m. Sunday
in the church rectory. Contributions may be made to the

STOVER, Martin. - In Pittstown on Monday April 14, 1845 - Mr. Martin
Stover aged 87 years - Mr. Stover was one of the earliest settlers in
Pittstown, has lived to raise 9 children, 8 of whom with their partners in
life are now living, and all members of the Methodist E. church. He has had
76 grandchildren, 52 of whom are now living, and 52 great-grandchildren, 41 now
living. 27 of Mr. Stover's grandchildren are members of the M. E. church and

Stover, occurred at her late residence in Pittstown, Monday, after an illness

STRONACH, George R. - George Stronach -
TROY - George R. STRONACH, 81, of Brunswick Road, died Tuesday [29 July 1997]
at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness. Born [23 October 1915]
in Montreal, Mr. Stronach moved to Troy as a child and attended Troy High School.
In 1936, he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps on a gypsy-moth control
project in the Alps Camp in Averill Park. During World War II, Mr. Stronach
served with the Navy Seabees on Saipan. For 32 years, he worked for the
Watervliet Arsenal, first as a machinist and subsequently as a quality-control
inspector, retiring in 1981. He also maintained a side business
repairing televisions and radios. Mr. Stronach was a communicant of
St. Francis de Sales Church. He was the widower of Leona LESSON STRONACH,
whom he married Nov. 24, 1942. Survivors include three sons,
Robert G. STRONACH of Marcy, Kenneth R. STRONACH of Watervliet
and James R. STRONACH of Clifton Park; a daughter, Jeanne M. STRONACH of Troy;
and nine grandchildren. Services will be at 9 a. m. Friday at the
Bryce Funeral Home, 276 Pawling Ave., and at 9:30 a. m. at
St. Francis de Sales Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated. Burial will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie. Calling hours will be

has moved to West Sandlake where he is keeping the hotel formerly known as the

STROPE, Henry E. - Henry E. Strope, veteran of the Civil War and well-known
hotel keeper, died Wednesday in Schenectady, where he had been living for the
past seven years. Mr. Strope was born in the village of Wynantskill sixty-six
years ago, and resided there and at West Sand Lake for many years, conducting
hotels in these places. About seven years ago he retired and, with his wife,
moved to Schenectady. Deceased was one of the surviving members of the old
Tibbits Corps, and for years was prominently identified with Post William
B.Tibbits, No 141, G. A. R. During the war he fought with the Seventh
Heavy Artillery, New York Volunteers, and was twice wounded at Cold Harbour.
After two years' service he was mustered out in 1865. Mr. Strope served as
deputy sheriff during the incumbency of Sheriff Tappen and Collins. He was a
member of Silver Brook Lodge, No. 722, I. O. O. F., of Wynantskill. The
survivors are his wife, who was formerly Miss Adalaide B. Sharpe of
Wynantskill, and three sons, Warren E. and Oscar G., of this city, and
Kerwin C. Strope of Schenectady. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at
2 o'clock from the Wynantskill Reformed Church. The interment will be in the

Nellie Stover Sweet of Eagle Bridge died suddenly in the kitchen of her home

health until the heart attack yesterday. Born in Valley Falls in 1866 the
daughter of the late Mary Yates Stover, she had lived in the town of White Creek
[Washington County, NY] for the last forty years. Survivors are her two daughters,
Mary, and Mrs. John (Libbie) Heselton of Deerfield, Mass. Funeral services will
be held Monday at 2 pm from the residence. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery,

- Mrs. Sipperly, Mother of Nun, Expires
- Mrs. Albert SIPPERLY of 715 Sixth Avenue, Watervliet, mother of Sister Mary Alberta of Ithaca and
a well-known resident of Watervliet, died yesterday at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
A native of Altona, she was the former Emma F. HARNETT. Her husband is a Watervliet contractor.
She has been a resident of Watervliet the greater part of her life. She was a communicant of
St. Bridget's Church and a member of its Rosary Society. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sipperly
is survived by her three daughters, Sister Mary Alberta, Mrs. John F. McLoughlin and
Miss Flora M. Sipperly, both of Watervliet, and a brother, John J. Harnett of Altona.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a. m. from the residence and thence to
St. Bridget's Church, where at 9:30 a. m. a solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

- Retired Troy Police Officers Dies - The
funeral of Sgt. Albert L. SNYDER, a veteran of 43 years on the Troy Police Force, who retired in 1953,
will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. from the John B. Lodge Funeral Home, 2243 5th Ave.
Rev. George Borthwick, pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
Burial will take place in Elmwood Hills Cemetery, Schaghticoke [Rensselaer County, NY].
Sgt. Snyder died last night in the Samaritan Hospital [in Troy] after a long illness.
His home was at 353 4th Ave. Sgt. Snyder during his last years on the force was
communications officer attached to the chief's office. He was a member of the
Troy Benevolent Police Association. He was a member, for many years, of the
Ninth Presbyterian Church, which is now united with the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Sgt. Snyder was born in Troy. Besides his wife, the former Emily B. HURLEY, he is
survived by a son, Albert P. SNYDER, of Santa Monica, Calif.; two daughters,
Mrs. Walter CAROLUS of Menands and Mrs. John O'CONNOR of Albany;
a brother, Walter F. SNYDER of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two sisters,
Mrs. Sosten LOPEZ of Los Angeles, Calif. and Mrs. Ada MAGILL of Glendale, Calif.

- MRS. SNYDER, POLICE SERGEANT'S WIDOW, DIES
- Mrs. Emily B. SNYDER, 86, of 250 3rd Ave., Troy, died yesterday at Memorial Hospital, Albany,
after a brief illness. Mrs. Snyder was the wife of the late Albert L. SNYDER, a former
Troy Police sergeant. She was born in Schaghticoke [Rensselaer County, NY] and lived in Troy
for many years. She was a member of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. Surviving are
two daughters, Mrs. John O'CONNOR of Albany and Mrs. Walter CAROLUS of Menands; and
a son, Albert P. SNYDER of Santa Monica, Calif. Funeral services will be held from
the John H. Lodge Funeral Home, 2243 5th Ave., Wednesday. Interment will take place
in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke, with Rev. George Borthwick, pastor of
Fifth Ave Presbyterian Church, officiating.

"I got a call at 8 o'clock in the morning that she had passed away.
I'm still in a state of shock," said her brother, Jack [Stapleton], who still
lives in Troy. He declined to comment further. When Jack purchased a bar on
Troy's east side in the 1970s, Maureen would always plug his Albia Tavern on
TV talk shows at the time. "Oh my God, no," was the reaction of Joseph Manupella,
a former Rensselaer County legislator and executive director of the Lansingburgh
Boys and Girls Club. Manupella read the dedication of the theater at HVCC during
the 1981 ceremony and first met the actress, a Catholic Central High School graduate,
some years earlier during a political rally. "We had quite an evening that night.
I knew her for years. She was quite a lady, loved Troy. She never forgot where
she came from." Former HVCC President Joseph Bulmer Sr. said Monday he had heard
of her death, and recalled Stapleton as always willing to speak with old friends
from the neighborhood, even those whom she by far outshone. "She lived around the
corner from me. She was a friendly person with us, who were not in her category
of potential," said Bulmer, 76. At the time of the theater's dedication in 1981,
Bulmer said: "Maureen has never left Troy in her heart. She's always been a
booster of Troy, so we thought it would be appropriate to throw a kiss back to her.
This is a special night for a special lady." Stapleton returned to campus in 2000,
when the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation established the
Maureen Stapleton Theatre Fund, an endowment created to support capital improvements
to the theater. "The entire college community is saddened by the news of
Stapleton's death; the mark she made on stage and screen is indelible.
In 1981, Hudson Valley Community College had the privilege to name its theatre
in Stapleton's honor - and we are proud that the theatre continues to be a
reminder of her generosity of spirit and love for her hometown,"
Hudson Valley President Andrew J. "Drew" Matonak said. "She never changed,
as far as putting on airs or anything like that. She was always herself,"
said Kathleen Connally of North Greenbush, a fellow actress who went with
Stapleton to New York City "when we were girls." She was told by a friend
Monday of Stapleton's death. "The main thing is, she was a very, very fine actress
and very dedicated to her profession," Connally said. "We go back a long way.
I hadn't seen her lately, but I have very fond and happy memories of her.
She was a very outgoing person and a very kind, loving person."

Muriel STEWART BROWN HUNTER, 99, died Wednesday evening, June 23, 2010 at her home in Covenant Towers.
Mrs. Hunter was born September 23, 1910, in Hoosick Falls, [Rensselaer County] NY, eldest daughter of the late
Florence CHASE STEWART and Adelbert T. STEWART. She was also preceded in death by a brother,
Clayton STEWART; her stepson, Stanley BROWN; and a beloved aunt, Helen STEWART METCALF.
Muriel graduated from Hoosick Falls High School in 1928 and from Albany State University (SUNY) with
a BS in library science in 1932. Mrs. Hunter married Wales BROWN in 1955 and enjoyed family life with
her mother and his two youngest children, Esther BROWN and Stanley BROWN, until his death in 1964.
She married Robert S. HUNTER in 1974. During her second marriage, Muriel and Robert enjoyed traveling
and visiting Scotland and England during the summers. Mrs. Hunter was a librarian at Cheney Public Library,
Hoosick Falls, and Enoch Pratt Library, Baltimore, Maryland. She spent four years (1946-1950) as an
Army librarian in Japan, setting up libraries for the American troops. She later was an Army librarian
at Camp Chaffee in Arkansas and at Fort Hood in Texas. She spent seventeen years as Chief Librarian at the
VA Hospital in Albany, NY. Survivors include her two sisters, Virginia BAUER and her children,
Edward "Spook" BAUER of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Beverly MARCHESE of El Paso, TX, and Janet DAY of Meadville, PA,
with her four sons, Stewart, Jonathan, Christopher and Stephen; stepdaughters, Esther SOWELL and
Jean HUNTER WHITE; stepson, John Hunter; and stepgrandchildren, Susan, Herbie and Dixie. She is also
survived by several grandnieces, grandnephews, and one great-grandnephew, Chase.
Funeral services will be held 11 a. m. Monday, June 28, 2010, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home,
with Chaplin Burt Bosworth officiating. Burial will follow at Southeastern Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a. m. on Monday at the funeral home prior to the service.
